Jiayin Li was born on May 7, 1988 in Shanghai, China. She entered Shanghai Theatre Academy in 2006 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Costume and Makeup Design. Her major was Makeup and her minor was Costume Design. She was awarded scholarships from 2006 to 2009 and the Excellent Student Award twice from 2007-2009. In her senior year, she was honored as the Excellent Graduate Award of the Institution of Higher Education in Shanghai. What’s more, her undergraduate research was given the honor Excellent Paper of Class 2010, SHTA. In addition, she spent a lot of time combining theory with practice. From 2007 to 2009, she did actors’ and actress’ makeup, and costume design for nine dramas. Her fashion work ‘SHOCK’, inspired by modern architecture, received positive comments in many exhibitions, such as the Shanghai Art Fair, the Shanghai EXPO and the Shanghai Concert Hall.
During 2007-2009, She worked as an assistant cosmetician for many brands’ press conferences, like C&A, ADIDAS, VOGUE, OGGI FASHION, etc. She also did an internship with fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar in Shanghai in 2012. As a Fashion Editor Assistant, she researched the latest fashion trends and coordinated with makeup artists and photographers for fashion shoots. These meaningful internships equipped her with in-field experience in the fashion industry.
Currently, she graduated with a M.A. in Fashion Design from Savannah College of Art and Design in March of 2014, and achieved Outstanding Achievement Award at SCAD. Studying at SCAD offers her an opportunity to explore the world of fashion design. Due to her multiple academic backgrounds, she is not limited solely to fashion design. Accessory design, styling, forecasting and marketing are also her interests. She believes that fashion design does not exist independently in the fashion industry. When she designs a piece of a garment, she will consider the whole look, including the makeup and hair style, the style of handbag, shoes and jewelry, which should match the clothes. She deeply enjoys the process of design and hopes to create more elegant, beautiful and innovative design work as her career continues to progress.
